Gallery 1957 celebrates its 10th anniversary with Where the Earth Remembers, a group exhibition curated by Marwan Zakhem, opening on 31 October 2026 at UNLIMITED, the gallery’s 1,400-square-metre exhibition space at Kempinski Galleria Mall in Accra. The exhibition forms part of Accra Cultural Week, which runs from 29 October to 2 November.
Bringing together artists from Ghana, across Africa and its diaspora, the exhibition reflects a decade of Gallery 1957’s engagement with contemporary art. It is also the most ambitious presentation to date at UNLIMITED, assembling artists from different generations and geographies around questions of memory, history and inheritance.
The exhibition takes the earth as a living record of human experience, where histories persist beyond written archives and official accounts. Memory also resides in materials, family records, the body, ancestral traditions and the landscapes people inhabit. These forms of knowledge shape how histories are understood, transmitted and contested.
Rather than treating inheritance as something fixed, Where the Earth Remembers considers how artists reinterpret the past through the conditions of the present. Their practices engage with the ways personal and collective histories survive across generations, while changing through new experiences, cultural encounters and material forms.
The exhibition features works by Ibrahim Mahama, Gideon Appah, Amoako Boafo, Serge Attukwei Clottey, Rita Mawuena Benissan, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Modupeola Fadugba, Godfried Donkor, Kaloki Nyamai, Jonathan Okoronkwo, Yaw Owusu, Professor Ablade Glover and Abdoulaye Konaté. Their practices span varied approaches to painting, sculpture and material-based work, bringing distinct perspectives to the exhibition’s exploration of historical continuity and change.
For Gallery 1957, the exhibition marks a decade of presenting contemporary art and supporting artists whose practices engage with local and transnational histories. Its anniversary also provides an opportunity to consider how contemporary art carries inherited knowledge forward—not through simple preservation, but through reinterpretation, questioning and transformation.
Where the Earth Remembers opens on Saturday, 31 October 2026, at 8 pm at UNLIMITED, Third Floor, Kempinski Galleria Mall, Accra. Exhibition continues through 16 January 2027.
